The Art Biz ep. 1: The Impatient Artist: Time and Your Art Career

With today’s post, we’re introducing a new feature: a monthly podcast.

My previous Art Marketing Action podcast was an audio version of the weekly newsletter, which you can still find online here and on iTunes.

I’m not sure what will happen in the future, but I am committed to deliver at least one content post a month in audio. Let’s get to it.

Are You Impatient About Your Art Career?

In this podcast, I talk with artist/author/coach Cynthia Morris about how to set up your art career for success – so that you’re in it for longevity, and not for instant gratification.

These topics came up (talk about thinking big!):

  • Legacy
  • Empowering yourself
  • Vision

  1. Yay! I love your old podcast, thrilled that you’re doing something audio again! I hope it ends up on iTunes at some point!

P.S. You know what would help me? If you named the audio file with Art Biz Coach or your name in the title, to help me find it, to get it into iTunes for listening to later on my phone. (it’s a lot of steps!)

    thanks!

  2. Great first podcast. I wish I’d heard this about three years ago. It is so easy to be anxious and in a hurry. Over the last three years, I’ve learned to put one foot in front of the other and to slow down and stay focused. Alyson, you taught me a lot of this!

Still so far to go and still must have a reality check from time to time.

    Thanks again and you rock!

  3. Richard Huston

Very positive and informative. I really enjoyed the insights and it helps my dedication to putting my own systems to work after participating in ACSS.

  4. Powerful tool – powerful message! The question of hobby vs. business continues to stare me down. The level of commitment to such broad-based systems has been a real eye-opener, thanks!

  5. Thank you for your insights. One thing that resonated with me was embracing the seemingly paradoxical sides of the success coin. Having just completed my first business course after being a sole proprietor/freelancer for four years- I too have come to realize the importance and value of the word “professional” in calling myself a professional artist. I have a different, more appreciative view of the word “system” now too. Thanks again!

    1. Clare,

Isn’t it funny how simply reframing things or having a new perspective on the words we use can make ALL the difference? As a writer, I really appreciate the power of language.

  6. You asked how your audience members felt about systems?

I LOVE systems. Systems just had me successfully enact and enjoy a residency program (held at home, where there are so many distractions!) during July. I have concrete, documented efforts for this month from my creative practice (studio time) AND digital work (aka marketing). All of this in spite of having to go to my day job for 3 of 4 weeks of this month.

Alas, my better half arrives home on the 29th of this month as he was gone the entire month, lol. Yet, I DO have systems in place to help me keep my creative practice and digital work in addition to trying to keep a life (outside of that day job).

Systems mean RELIEF: the thinking is done. Because the thinking is done, then all I have to do is follow the system because that system works for me. When I try to work outside of an existing system…I’m grabbing that system because I don’t want to think, I just want to DO. Systems mean making my digital work at least feel faster.

    1. Angeline,

I am so happy that you love systems! You are spot on with this comment:

Because the thinking is done, then all I have to do is follow the system because that system works for me.

That saves you SO much time in deciding what to do and how to do it. So you can spend your precious decision time on your art making!

    Loved the podcast!
As Bill Murray said in “What About Bob?”… baby steps!
Getting on board finally. Examining all mind sets & systems
I thought I had in place & real & unreal expectations.
    Refreshing. Thank you.
So good to know everybody goes thru some form of questioning
    or procrastination. Big or small.
Slaying the dragons, one at a time!

  8. Alyson I am so happy to hear you in podcast form again! I have missed having you as that little voice in my head! I also enjoyed the conversation format. I wanted to grab a cup of tea & join you and Cynthia -thanks gals!

  9. I am obsessed with podcasts and listen to them all the time in my car. I have had a difficult time finding informative interesting art themes. So I was beyond excited to find you are now producing a podcast. It was a great first podcast. And having Cynthia Morris with you was an extra delight.
Thank you for doing a podcast. You’ve made my day.
I can’t wait for the next one.
    Weekly would be amazing!

  10. Illuminata Senetre

It was helpful to hear you both bouncing off from one another. I really liked the combination of two speakers. I have had a creative life of on and off periods, ebbs and flows, due to living with chronic illness, but I really like what was said about legacy and doing that which one doesn’t like to do. I took away from it that I can just keep plugging away. Keep going back to my vision, my plan of action, even after bouts of difficulty, which is really what I have done with my circuitous life path. It helped me to accept myself.

    Thank you, both!

Looking forward to the next podcast.

    1. I am glad to hear this helped you to accept yourself and your pace, Illuminata! That’s so important.

Thanks for taking the time to comment and let us know that this inspired you.

  11. I really want to thank you both for this podcast. I learnt so much and it helps to know it is about scheduling time to do the things i find hard, feeling the accomplishment of that and then doing the next hard thing and experiencing the growth that comes from that. Also i loved when you talked about knowing yourself well enough to know when you are avoiding a task and when you are recharging your batteries by doing something for yourself, and that sometimes when you appear to be doing other things you are working through ideas and directions for yourself. At least those are interpretations I came away with. I loved the fact that you had an overall structure but that there was room for spontaneous insights and wisdom. Loved the podcast and i am really keen to subscribe and learn more. Will be listening to this podcast many times I’m sure. Thank you for your generosity in sharing this.

  12. Alyson, I was a big fan of your previous podcast and learned so much from it! Today’s edition was equally interesting and useful! Thank you both so much 😉 I have subscribed, and look forward to upcoming episodes!! ~Ashley (aka ‘The Angry Artist’) LOL

  13. Love the podcast, and look forward to more! I had one suggestion only about the player embedded in the article, if it can have at all a 30 sec rewind I’ve seen on some players. This feature makes it easier to take notes and listen at my day job! Thanks so much!

  14. Loved the podcast, just what I needed to hear this week. I am slowly putting systems in place and realizing no matter how hot my studio is without AC, I would rather work there then at home. My studio really is my happy place and home is where my computer lives.

  15. I loved the podcast. Since I aldo like all TED talks, I found I would watch them and didn’t get work done. I really like better the podcast where I can create and listen to something positive instead. I am so used to hearing your voice now that it comforts me when I hear your great laugh and good advice. You continue to inspire me to do better.

  16. Enjoyed your 1st podcast & have the future ones tagged to notify me. We all can relate to the challenges of being a working artist. (The mindset of renaming your craft room to Art Studio is powerful!) Thanks for this meaty conversation, absent of the fluffy, no valuable content cotton candy. However, I am going to dish up some ice cream. I’m getting close to pushing my on- line store button! Keep the podcasts coming! We are listening & sharing!

  17. I really enjoyed this podcast. I liked the topic of systems. I know systems are great. I have systems for keeping my house up so that it seems to keep itself clean with minimum effort on my part (thanks to FlyLady). I don’t yet have any systems for my art making or art promoting. I look forward to learning art systems.

    1. gczyul Hi! IÂ’m just wodnnrieg if i can get in touch with you, since you have amazing content, and iÂ’m thinking of running a couple co- projects! email me pls
