Always H x W x D

Quick reminder to always list your sizes as Height x Width x Depth (in inches or centimeters). This is standard in the artworld.

  1. Are you sure about this? I create custom art for hotels, healthcare and corporate offices, working with interior designers. The established standard in my world is w x h x d. Robin Walker

Yes, Robin. I am positive. It is the museum (and artworld) standard. Pick up any museum catalog or any book on art and all work will be HxWxD. Contemporary quiltmakers have to relearn this because all quilt “patterns” are in WxH. Photographers are used to stating measurements according to paper size–regardless of orientation. Interior design is a different world. In the artworld–the world of museums and galleries and art festivals–it’s HxWxD.

  3. An easy way to remember this is HoWDy. A lot of professions use measurement sequences differently. For instance, if you are communicating with someone for pedestal building, make sure to follow your measurements with a defining letter, for example 40″H x 15″W x 15″D.
