Out with the Surrealists

I just returned from a perfectly fine exhibit at our local Foothills Art Center here in Golden, CO. The title is “REALationships: Works of Surreal Inspiration” and was curated by Michael Chavez.

Even though I had plenty of Modernism in my art history career, I still think of Dali when I think of Surrealism, and I don’t care a lick for Dali. But I do like other Surrealists, particularly Rene Magritte, Max Ernst, Leonora Carrington, and Joseph Cornell. So why aren’t they the first to come to mind when the word "Surrealism" is muttered??

The artists at the FAC are contemporary and I believe all living in the region. I very much enjoyed the paintings of Jenny Morgan and Ricki Klages. And I have long been a fan of the painting collaborations between Wes Hempel and Jack Balas.

In fact, there wasn’t anything to dislike about this exhibit. Strong imagery, lovely installation, and spot-on painting and drawing. If only there had been some 3-D work . . . but I suppose that’s another show.
