Meet more people

As part of the ArtBizCoach.com 5-year anniversary, I’ll share with you the second newsletter I wrote.

April 1, 2002

Dear Artist . . .

The message contained in this issue is so important that I can’t stress it enough. If you are relying on one gallery to sell your work or, worse, are hoping that you’ll start selling just because your work is good, wise up. “It’s who you know.” And you need to know more people.

MEET MORE PEOPLE
———————————–

Meet more people. Not just artists and people who travel in art circles. Meet MORE PEOPLE! If there is one thing I have learned in the last year it is this: I led a sheltered life during my years inside of the art museum. Not that I didn’t love being there, but . . . wow! . . . there is a whole world out here about which I knew next to nothing. Most importantly: businesspeople. They know how to network! Their livelihoods often depend on it. And so does yours.

~~-~~”You can be anti-social once you’re famous.”–Rachelle Disbennett-Lee, business coach~~-~~

If they wanted to buy art, most people outside of the art world have no idea where to find art in their local communities (save, say, Santa Fe and New York). Why? We’re obviously not doing a good job telling them about us. It’s either that or they are too intimidated to go out and find it. So, what is an artist to do? You just have to make more people aware of you and your art. Get more involved in your community. Sit on committees and volunteer for posts that don’t have anything to do with art.

Everyone has some form of art in their home. They’d probably like yours if they just knew who you were.

  1. Hi Alyson – This is still good advice! I have been very active in the world where people are trying to make the world a better place. Almost all my clients are referrals from this population. I am getting referred based on my reputation from people knowing me for years. Then my graphic design and paintings can speak for themselves. But it is my past volunteer work that has gotten the door opened. Now I am networking in the artist world – and I love this whole new network! Thank you for all your advice and wisdom! – Diane Clancy
