A grassroots movement has proclaimed today, October 25 (Picasso’s birthday) to be International Artist Day.
Deep Thought Thursday
Why should this day be reserved for artists? Or should it? Is it important? Why or why not?
What does it mean to have an International Artist Day? What should it mean?
Why Picasso’s birthday and not someone else’s?
What can you do to celebrate?
What can you do to promote IAD now and in the future?
I find this an interesting challenge since artists, in general, aren’t joiners. Can International Artist Day take off without the support of thousands of artists?

I work real hard to dispel any sort of “flaky artist” fantasies that people have but sometimes it rears it’s ugly head. Like just now when I tried to post this comment, it landed on another blog entry.
Since the stars and planets are SO IMPORTANT! Yeah. I re-post here:
Someone told me recently that Neptune just landed up in the sky where it was during the Renaissance. I suppose the ARTISTS DAY is more evidence. The dawning of and Art Renaissance is here. Thank you Jesus. Amen.

I joined http://www.noenga.com a great international artist’s community with no regrets, my artworks, paintings are embraced and given votes, I approve of this site and have enjoyed many great artworks from a diverse world-wide community of artists!!!
It is important not only for exposure outside the USA but for a sense of what, where, why and who of global creatives!
That is simple…it is my birthday today…birthday cake and painting! The life of an artist…ain’t it grand!!!
I’m still not much of a joiner, but I’m less allergic to the idea of collaborating with friends. About two weeks ago, I started a shared Pinterest board with some friends who, like me, are artists and mothers. http://pinterest.com/artistlisamb/artist-motherboard/. No pressure, just wanted to hang with people like me who share their day with smallish children.
So this post is especially timely!
This is awesome! Let it be known throughout the land that October 25th is also MY birthday. It’s a sign. I can think of a lot of wonderful ways to promote. And a mutual happy birthday to Joye.
It’s great to have an International Artists Day- it promotes amazing artistic talent and shows people the value of art in our everyday lives. Maybe having a day for artists will encourage people to create their own art or try to find a work of art that speaks to them. The “Earth” without “Art” is just “eh”
Not sure what this means. It sounds like one of those made-up Hallmark holidays, like secretary’s day. A day we should be appreciated? Why not just appreciate artists year-round if you like their work?
Mind you, I’m all for it if someone brings me cake!
Did someone say cake?
I’m with Tina – sounds made up – noise for the sake of noise.
Why not have this holiday, especially when so many people are artists of one kind or another. That said, I’ll celebrate this holiday as I do many others – working in the studio.
Hell yes artists should have their own day! Everyone & everything else does so why not the people that make and share beauty with the world.
As for the celebration… First off, Cupcakes. Second, visit museums and studios. Third, break out the artists tool box and do your best to enjoy a day made for artists, a day dedicated to art, and create something magical.
A day in the studio getting a collaborative piece started and working with a student. Then, tonight off to the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art for a talk on “Your Brain on Art”. That should do it, don’t you think?
I totally missed that there was a national artist day – guess I was too distracted making art and running my studio business!! It does sound a little Hallmark-ish, but then again, Hallmark has branded themselves this way. Perhaps it’s up to us creatives to put a personal twist on celebrating artist recognition and art in general – I agree that it should be every day!!
Kimberly: I love it that you were too busy running a business to think about it! IMHO, that’s the way it should be.
