Rethinking Mailing Lists for Artists (ep. 182)

Your artist mailing list is your most valuable marketing asset. It is the primary tool you use to share your art with the world. It’s your #1 marketing asset.

Let me emphasize that by saying it a different way: There is nothing more important you can do to build your art business and career than to nurture your relationships.

In reality, most artists have 3 mailing lists, not just 1. Here’s what I mean.

Artist Carol MacConnell

The Art Biz ep. 171: Self Sales, Open Studios, and Relationships with Interior Designers with Carol MacConnell

A lot of artists say they’d like to work with interior designers, but few artists have been able to crack the code for doing so. Carol MacConnell is one of them. In this episode, we discuss her income streams, how she, as an artist who is legally deaf, navigates conversations, and how she finds, nurtures, and works with interior designers.

You’ll also hear me plead my case for contracts. Always.

Artist Kelly Pelfrey on The Art Biz

The Art Biz ep. 162: She Knows Exactly How Much Her Art Income Will be Every Month with Kelly Pelfrey

Kelly Pelfrey’s goal in 2020 was to replace her $50,000 teaching salary, but she quadrupled that. Her income has allowed her husband to leave his job to focus on his doctorate, feel comfortable about taking maternity leave, and save for college for her children.

In this episode of The Art Biz, Kelly shares her income sources, which are dominated by sales of commissions, followed distantly by releases of small paintings.

Options for Growing Your Email List

When used, your email list can help you establish trust, cultivate relationships, and showcase your experience and expertise.

It’s your #1 marketing asset—unique to your art and goals.

While growing an email list has become challenging, that doesn’t mean we should give up. Take advantage of every opportunity (asking, using forms, offering freebies) to attract and add subscribers—remembering, always, that it’s more important to engage the right people than to focus on the numbers.

How To Warm Up a Cold Email List

What good is an email list if you’re not using it? (Answer: No good.)

Neglecting subscribers for months or,yikes!, years, renders your list cold. If you’re ready to commit to staying in touch with the people who asked to hear from you, you might need to reintroduce yourself.

It’s not as difficult as it sounds, but the longer you wait, the bigger the task seems.

The Art Biz ep. 147: How to Guarantee that People Remember You with Skip Hill

When Skip Hill said he needed a system for following up with his collectors, I knew I wanted to help.

He was neglecting his important business relationships at the most basic level. He said he was tired of being the stereotypical bohemian artist and ready to hone his business chops. Skip understood that the place to start this new commitment was with his network.

The Art Biz ep. 142: Activate Your Marketing for a Bigger Audience

Marketing is more effective and more enjoyable when you make more personal connections rather than relying on posts and broadcasts. When you interact 1-on-1, whether it’s in person or digitally.

I call this activating your marketing. I have suggestions for how to do this when using social media, searching for venues for showing and selling, getting the most from exhibitions, and more.
